Maalim wanaqsan [INSERT NAME]!

I hope that you will agree to help send women living in war-ravaged Somalia to college.

Two years ago, a number of Somali women were recruited into the journalism program at Puntland State University in Somalia. Unfortunately, after a few months, virtually all the women were forced to drop out because they could not afford tuition. For each $1,000 that is raised, a Somali woman will be able to attend classes for an entire year at one of six Somali universities.

Funds I raise will be given to the U.S. Committee for the UN Development Program (UNDP-USA). UNDP-USA will aggregate donations made here in the United States and grant them to the United Nations in Somalia, who administer this exciting and worthwhile scholarship program. More information about UNDP-USA can be found at www.undp-usa.org.

Please donate online at www.undp-usa.org/somalia! Feel free to contact me at [INSERT EMAIL/PHONE NUMBER] for additional information.

Sincerely,

UNDP-USA Executive Director Visits Somalia

Elizabeth Latham, UNDP-USA Executive Director, recently returned from a visit to Somalia to see some of the work that UNDP is engaged in.

"I was amazed and impressed with the hopefulness of the people that I met during my stay in Somalia. Somalia is a conservative Muslim nation and I was impressed to see that in some areas women are being empowered, thanks to investments in education. For example, the women in this photo rose to the top of their class and, despite many obstacles, decided to join the first ever female police unit."
