Event Ideas

Thank you for deciding to hold an event in support of women in Somalia! There are numerous options for holding an event - don’t feel constrained by this list. Be creative! We will continue to expand this list with ideas as people suggest them, so please send your ideas to us at partnerships@undp-usa.org

Share a meal: People love food! What better way to engage your friends (and get them to open their wallets) than fill their stomachs.

  • If you are doing the cooking, you might decide to try a recipe from Somalia.(For recipe ideas click here)
  • If you aren’t much of a cook, have a potluck and ask people who don’t bring dishes to donate double.
  • If you don’t have much space at home, consider holding your event at a Somali or African restaurant in your community. Work with the owner to get a portion of the restaurant’s profits donated to the scholarship fund. Click here for contact information of local Somali organizations. Click here for a business outreach packet that you can customize for your needs.
  • Get some exercise: Who doesn’t like feeling good while doing good?

  • Host a sporting tournament with entrance fees going toward the scholarship fund.
  • Invite your friends to dance the night away in support of Somali Women. At home or school, play some Somali tunes and have a dance contest.
  • Shake for Somalia at a club and make it a true ladies’ night! Work with the owners to donate the night’s profits to the scholarship fund. Click here for a business outreach packet that you can customize for your needs.
  • Hold a fun match between local community leaders with entrance fees going towards the fund.
  • Tease your brain: Raise awareness by holding a trivia night.

  • Host a discussion for individuals in your community to talk about Somalia, empowerment through education, or conflict and poverty. Partner with religious groups, college organizations, and other community groups to increase attendance and identify potential speakers.
  • Approach a local pub or cafe to hold a trivia night. Come up with fun facts about Somalia, the United Nations, and women’s education to quiz contest entrants. You can charge people to enter the contest or ask the venue to donate their profits from the evening. Click here for a business outreach packet that you can customize for your needs.
  • Hold a spelling bee where contestants spell words related to Somalia. For each word spelled correctly, those who aren’t playing must make a donation!

    UNDP-USA Executive Director Visits Somalia

Elizabeth Latham, UNDP-USA Executive Director, recently returned from a visit to Somalia to see some of the work that UNDP is engaged in.

"I was amazed and impressed with the hopefulness of the people that I met during my stay in Somalia. Somalia is a conservative Muslim nation and I was impressed to see that in some areas women are being empowered, thanks to investments in education. For example, the women in this photo rose to the top of their class and, despite many obstacles, decided to join the first ever female police unit."
